Catch the Flame

Over the next few months the world’s gaze will be upon London as the 30th modern Olympic Games gets underway. Starting on 19th May the Olympic torch will traverse the country in readiness for the opening ceremony in July. The symbol of the Olympic Flame can be traced back to ancient Greece and a fire that burned constantly in Olympia. According to mythology this was to commemorate the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus.

For Christians the image of fire reminds us of the flames that appeared on the heads of the apostles on the day of Pentecost as the Holy Spirit came upon them. This event marked the birth of the church and the fulfilment of promises from God that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord would be saved. Traditionally Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter and this year falls on 27th May.

To celebrate these two events Life Church and St John’s Church are partnering with our friends from Miracle Street for the ‘Catch the Flame’ weekend. On the Saturday afternoon we shall be holding a family fun day in Hartletts Park with an Olympic theme. This will be followed on the Sunday afternoon by an open air celebration of Pentecost, also in Hartletts Park. We hope that you will join us for these exciting events as together we ‘Catch the Flame’

Catch the Flame

As we come to the end of our InsideOut equipping sessions, our prayer is that you are inspired and ready for the Catch the Flame events at the end of May. The complete programme looks like this:

  • Friday 25th May – Events during the day in Hook and Rotherwick Schools
  • Saturday 26th May – Family Fun Day from 2:00 pm  – 5:00 pm in Hartletts Park
  • Sunday 27th May – Sunday Celebration from 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm in Hartletts Park
  • Wednesday 6th – Saturday 9th June – Catch the Flame Kids Club 9:30 am – 12:30 pm at Life Church Centre

All these events are designed to help us build towards sharing Jesus with people in our community and with this in mind, we shall be launching a 7 week programme called Christianity Explored on Thursday 31st May. This is similar in style to Alpha but is based upon Mark’s Gospel and is designed to help people encounter the real Jesus as found in the gospels.

These programmes all need volunteers! Whether it is to paint faces, serve cream teas, mingle with visitors, cook meals; there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to become involved. In fact your involvement is vital to help ensure that this outreach programme goes with a bang! Please speak to David Gibbons to sign up to help, above all please pray that we will see people respond to the good news over the coming months.

If God, Then What? – by Andrew Wilson

IfGodThenWhatI have just finished reading ‘If God, Then What?’ by Andrew Wilson. David Stroud sums it up well: “Intelligent, witty and disarming, Andrew has delivered a fascinating and engaging account of how we might find answers to the biggest questions of life. Who are we? Where are we going? And how can I get in on the good life? This book is easy to read and hard to put down. It is powerful, compelling stuff.” I found myself laughing out loud many times as I read the book.
